I think this is going to depend on the plumber, rates in your local area, and on what is wrong with your hot water tank.
If it’s electric, and the heating element burned out, it might be an easy, quick fix that they can squeeze in (I had this happen a couple years ago, I don’t remember exactly – but I think it was under 0). If they have to replace the entire hot water heater, it’s going to be more expensive (electric – they’ve estimated around 0. For mine, very old and not up to code, plus special type, is more like 0-00 to replace).
Do you have any good, impartial referral sources in your area? I’ve used kudzu with good results (but it’s not everywhere), and have heard of Angie’s List – thats a good way to make sure you get someone competent who won’t rip you off!
The way my plumber works is – there’s a fee for him to come out, but if he does work (rather than just diagnosing a problem and/or giving an estimate) the fee is waived. So if I call him to look at a problem and give an estimate, he’ll charge , but if he actually fixes it and I pay him for that, he doesn’t charge the .
Not sure how much he’d charge for an emergency during weird hours – for the water heater – this probably actually isn’t that type of emergency (ie you don’t need him to come out at 3 am because a pipe burst).
What you should do is:
- find a referral (online or from a friend) for a reliable plumber
- call him, ask about availability – I’ve had times when my plumber had an opening and could come out that day or the next!
- describe the problem and see what he recommends
- ask about pricing, what he’s going to charge to come out, if it’s waived if he does the work, and if he can give you a ballpark figure for what he thinks you need (you can’t hold him to this, since he hasn’t actually seen your water heater, but it can help you understand what you’re looking at and prepare for it!)
if he can’t come out soon enough, you can try getting another referral, and hope to find somebody who can come out sooner.
good luck, and i hope you just need a quick/cheap repair to get you back up and running!

hot water tank, r u in the uk…….check the fuse next to the tank should have an amber light its a fuse spur
Aye, I hate when this happens: Your water heater goes out all of a sudden, providing not hot water without advance notice; it should be able to tell us in advance of its failure so that it can make it easier for us to schedule a repair that timely coincides with its actual failure. But enough of wishful thinking.
Well, you need to have a local plumbing contractor give you the local rate for this project, as the contractor would only be able to more accurately assess the situation. Fortunately, there are plenty of local plumbing contractors seeking to give free estimates with no obligation. It’s important that you get a local estimate and not rely on guesses found here on Yah because the cost of material (what is needed to fix the plumbing problem) and labor greatly varies by location.
As I said, free estimates from local plumbing contractors are the key to your success in this home improvement repair project of yours. Here’s a great link to a handyman site that offers free very resourceful information to assist you in determining the cost of your project, and, ultimately, selecting a local plumbing contractor in an effort to get the best deal for you:
